Birmingham Councillor visits hostel to put spotlight on homelessness in the city

On Wednesday, 8 November, Birmingham Councillor Sharon Thompson visited Trident Reach’s homeless hostel in the city centre to learn first-hand about its work to fight Birmingham’s homelessness crisis.

The Birmingham City Councillor met with staff and service users to find out more about how the Midlands based charity helps people who are experiencing homelessness. Washington Court is a direct access hostel that provides 101 beds to both men and women.

The support offered addresses the underlying issues that have contributed to the individual’s homelessness, including but not limited to; mental health, drug and alcohol addiction, financial problems and criminal activity.

Ms Thompson who grew up in Yardley, is both a magistrate and a Birmingham City Councillor as well as a champion for tackling the homelessness crisis within the city; using her own experiences from nineteen years ago when she found herself homeless and had to find help through a city charity to secure a roof over her head.

Councillor Thompson said: “I was very impressed with the Washington Court service and the feedback from my meeting with the resident was extremely positive. I really thought The Skills Hub facility, onsite, is really important to support customers build their confidence and skills to provide a solid foundation for their future. I can tell that Washington Court provides genuine care to all its customers and are a real credit.”

David Jones, Trident Group’s Director of Housing and Social Care said: “I am always pleased to welcome local representatives to our services especially today as Councillor Thompson is a real advocate for increasing quality services to those that are homeless in Birmingham. She understands many of the challenges vulnerable homeless people face as well as organisations like ourselves providing support services.”
